The story of dim sum began in the tea houses of Canton (now Guandong) province over a thousand years ago, when it became the custom to accompany this refreshing drink with a selection of small savoury or sweet delicacies. Tired, thirsty and hungry, travellers and farmers along the old Silk Road would stop off at tea houses to yum cha, 'to drink tea', and dim sum 'to touch the heart' with a selection of tasty little morsels.
